Billye Jean Hopkins, 82, Sand Springs, Oklahoma, went home to be with the Lord, Monday, July 30, 2012.
Billye was born in Van Buren, Arkansas, on May 11, 1930, to William Othello Lockhart and Reba Elizabeth (Hays) Lockhart. After graduating from Sand Springs High School, Billye married her sweetheart Harold Dean Hopkins in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on February 14, 1949. Together they enjoyed a beautiful marriage of 61 years before Harold Dean’s death in April of 2010. Quilting at the church and being with her beloved family occupied much of Billye’s time. Being a librarian for the Tulsa City/County was a job that Billye was passionate about. Storytelling and reading to the children at the Pratt and Page Memorial libraries in Sand Springs and throughout Tulsa County thrilled her. Besides attending some college courses and receiving several awards for her accomplishments and service, Billye knew and was known by all the other employees of the library system in Tulsa and Tulsa County, and was loved by many patrons who Billye took superior individual and personal care of their literary needs. The memories will remain forever in the minds of her grandchildren and the children at the libraries of the many story hours and summer reading programs conducted throughout the years. She was an active member of the Olivet Baptist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Billye will be greatly missed by her family, many friends, and her beloved Sunday School Class.
