Velma Howerton

Velma Howerton, 95, Sand Springs, Oklahoma, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 26, 2013.

Velma was born to Mollie (Farmer) and H.B. Walker in Pilot Point, Texas, on January 21, 1918 along with her identical twin, Delma , who resides in Kansas City, Kansas. She was married to Robert Eugene Howerton in Cushing, Oklahoma in 1939. Having a Masters Degree in Education, Velma taught at Red Rock, Oklahoma and Tulsa, Oklahoma Public Schools, for 35 years before retiring. Being an active member of Olivet Baptist Church for 57 years, she served as pianist, and taught a Sunday School Class until the age of 85. Velma started the first Children’s Choir while attending the original Olivet Baptist Church. Many people referred to her as an Intercessory “Prayer Warrior”, which she accepted gladly and humbly. Reading the Bible, studying the scriptures, and memorizing verses, became Velma’s favorite pastime. The great ability to manage time and money, enabled her to give generously to those in need and to the church that she loved so dearly. The family and friends of Velma will greatly miss her wonderful personality. She lived and died with dignity and respect.

Preceding her in death were her parents Molly Elizabeth and Henry B. Walker; husband Robert Eugene Howerton; brothers Don and Willis Walker; sisters Lucille Thrasher and Elva Tuttle; her loving daughter Janice Turpin, and grandson Jerry Don Childress.

Velma is survived by her daughters Donna Moore and husband John, and Roberta Clinkenbeard and husband Larry; beloved twin sister Delma Ray; 6 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends.

A memorial service for Velma will be Friday, March 29, 2013, at 11:00am, in the Olivet Baptist Church, 155 North 65th West Avenue, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Graveside services will be Friday, March 29, 2013, at 4:00pm. in the Cushing Fairlawn Cemetery, Cushing, Oklahoma.

Visitation for Velma will be Wednesday, March 27, 2013, from 4-8pm, and Thursday, March 28, 2013, from 8:00am until 8:00pm. The family will greet friends from 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Thursday, March 28, 2013.
